Hi everyone

Here are the brief results from the ‘Open Sports Nationals’ at Shakey last weekend 27th – 29th August, with a full writeup and results to follow as soon as we can!

The Wild Bunch had a total of 5 teams competing at the event:

Phil James in “Rampage” (#1 Qualifier again! .006 off twice!! Well done!)
Darryl Howells in “Chemical Reaction” (unfortunately bent a valve on warmup Saturday, so could not race)
Alan Loten in “Paranoia” (fantastic run in the Final, and continuing great form!)
Bob Hawkins in “Time Traveller II” (well and truly back in the 6’s and more records, overcoming damage!)
Steven East in “Ellie’s in Trouble Now” (with Ellie as very capable crew chief, good strong runs)

Unfortunately, other entrants did not make the event - Terry & Ruth Clifford in “Ratcatcher Resurrection” suffered a camper breakdown en route and had to return home, and Sarah Howells could not race “Black Pig Too” as the car was discovered to have some engine damage prior to event.

Saturday’s weather started okay, but there was later torrential rain and thunder and lightning which meant that only one qualifier took place. Sunday was much better and although an hour was lost to rain, we had 4 more qualifiers. Monday turned out fantastic weather, and all eliminations were run and completed by 3pm!

1st Place: Bob Hawkins in “Time Traveller II”
2nd Place: Alan Loten in “Paranoia”
3rd Place: Phil James in “Rampage”

Here are the Spot Prizes that were awarded at the weekend:-

#1 Qualifier: Phil James in “Rampage” .006 off (did it twice for good measure!)
Best Reaction: Bob Hawkins in “Time Traveller II” .081 (in the Final)
Closest to Dial-in: Bob Hawkins in “Time Traveller II” .000 off!!! (in the Final!)
Best Appearing Car: Alan Loten in “Paranoia”
Best Appearing Team: Team “Time Traveller II”

Highlights of the weekend included: 5 qualifiers and a great group of cars and racers!

PB’s:
Bob Hawkins in “Time Traveller II” 6.810 !!!!!! (he also ran 6.817 and 6.83 and a 201mph!)
Steven East in “Ellie’s in Trouble Now” 141.81 Mph

Bob’s new PB is also a new Wild Bunch ET record, so many Congratulations to him on this!!! The run was actually recorded on a 6.81 Dial-in in a very exciting final against Alan Loten who broke out with a fantastic 9.136 on a 9.25 Dial-in, very near his PB.

So not only did Bob record a PB, he broke the Wild Bunch ET record, recorded a perfect to Dial-in run, and Won the Final, all in one go!!! Many Congratulations Bob!!!! He also won the APIRA Series with this result, and took the lead of the Springbridge MSA Series. Congratulations again!

Alan Loten emerged the winner of the 2016 Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series after his excellent Runner-up placing at this event. Many Congratulations to Alan on his first ever Series win in the Wild Bunch! And to his top crewman Steve Williams! A great team!!

It was a really good event overall. Many thanks to all the Shakespeare County marshals and officials, track crew and organisers for all their hard work over the weekend! Special thanks to Mark Coulsell who did an absolutely fantastic job pit running for all of the classes at the weekend! Well done, Mark! And a big Happy Birthday to Lynne Coulsell on her 50th, continuing celebrations at the track

Really looking forward to an exciting finale at the ‘National Finals’ at Santa Pod 3 weeks this Friday.

Full report posted as soon as we can! Plus the news on the points standings!

I attended only Monday to spectate and although only 3 cars still standing everyone put on a great show. I had with me a first time spectator of drag racing and he was way more than impressed. Congratulations to all, Bob for his incredible runs, Alan and Steve for the first Wild Bunch Championship and a terrific run in the final, Phil for another excellent performance, just wasn't to be his day with Bob's incredible form and Alan's recent form. Great job by all and lovely to talk to so many Wild Bunchers during the day. Bring on the HRD, block is back with new liners on Monday so we will be there.

Well done to all

Alan

Hi Al

Great that you got to see things from a spectators' point of view and enjoyed it all! I agree. Although a very small field still left standing, still a great show by all! :-)

Best of luck with getting that engine finished in time!

Will be great to have you guys there.

All the best
Claire
