| Hi everybody
Here is the brief news from our ‘Fall Nationals’ at the National Finals at Santa Pod, last weekend, 6th & 7th October.
The Wild Bunch had a small but wonderful field of 5 teams competing at the event:
• Philippa Turton in ‘Bitchcraft’ (another huge effort and lots of work with Mark getting the gearbox out, worked on, and back in again!! Great driving by Philippa; nice to see Skippy pitching in for crewing and Ford also giving great support!)
• Phil James in ‘Rampage’ (brilliant to see Phil doing so well all round this season, and a great effort to be at the event with family commitments and long distance travel the next day!!)
• Callum Swinchatt in ‘Pryzm Altered’ (great to see Callum and team back out racing with their fabulous period perfect Topo; fantastic driving by Callum on all three squirrely runs!)
• Keith Crampton in ‘Soul Town Shaker’ (great to see Keith running and in with a shout of the Wild Bunch win; sending much love to wife Christine and family)
• Bob Hawkins in ‘Time Traveller II’ (another Herculean effort with Bob building up another engine after damage at the Hot Rod Drags!! Well done to the whole team on the hard work!)
Unfortunately entrant Darryl Howells could not make it with ‘Chemical Reaction’ as lovely wife Sarah has just had a little op and Darryl was looking after her (hope he’s doing a good job Sarah!! All the best, and all of the Bunch are sending you all their Love and Get Well Soon wishes!!!!).
Sadly Saturday’s weather started with a little drizzle and unfortunately remained wet throughout the day until early evening, so no qualifying could take place. The officials put emergency qualifying measures in place for all of the ‘all run classes’, so names were drawn out of an envelope for qualifying positions. Amazing that Phil James qualifies first, even when he doesn’t even run! Sunday dawned dry and fine though cool, and the weather stayed good all day, though cooling rapidly towards evening. Due to several delays and being further down the running order, we did not get our first round until 4pm!! We got all 3 rounds of eliminations completed, including the Final in the dark at 7:00pm, so it was a great way to finish off the season with some good racing
Here are the Top 4:
1st Place: Callum Swinchatt in ‘Pryzm Altered’ (his first ever Wild Bunch win!)
2nd Place: Philippa Turton in ‘Bitchcraft’ (her first ever Final!)
3rd Place: Phil James in ‘Rampage’ (another great Top 4 placing)
4th Place: Keith Crampton in ‘Soul Town Shaker’ (great to see Keith in the Top 4 again)
Huge commiserations to Bob Hawkins and team, as the amazing ‘Time Traveller II’ was shut down after Bob’s one and only brilliant burnout, for a small fluid leak. What a huge shame after Bob’s gargantuan effort building another strong motor up in between events! Just cannot express the amount of hard work and perseverance he and the team did and had just to be there! And so very sorry not to see Bob finish the season on what promised to be another fantastic 6-second pass. Well done on all he did to get there, and all the very best of luck for next season to Bob and the whole team!!
Here are the Spot Prizes that were won:-
#1 Qualifier: not awarded as qualifying was by draw out of an envelope
Best Reaction (Race-day): Callum Swinchatt in ‘Pryzm Altered’ .182 (Plus 2nd and 3rd best too!) *
Closest to Dial-in (Race-day): Callum Swinchatt in ‘Pryzm Altered’ .404! (yes that was the closest!)
Best Engineered: Callum Swinchatt in ‘Pryzm Altered’ (well deserved, stunning car!)
Best Appearing Car & Team: Keith Crampton and the ‘Soul Town Shakers’! (reason #836 Keith! Fair play! Fantastic appearance! Well done Hayley and the Marras too)
* Most cautious reaction of the day does not even go to Phil with his 1.241 on his first round Bye, as Philippa made doubly sure on her Semi-Final Bye with a 2.762 RT! Well done both on holding the nerves!
Callum Swinchatt in ‘Pryzm Altered’ 142.61 mph (after a great driving job in round 1!)
It was quite a trying weekend all round with no racing Saturday, emergency qualifying and a long wait for the rounds, but all the teams kept their spirits up and once again did themselves proud!!
It was a horrible end to the event to see Andy Robinson’s bad crash last run of the day in the Pro Mod final, but a huge relief to hear he had gotten out of the car himself, and to see him in the pits okay just an hour afterwards. Another thing to prove what an awesome car builder he is. All the very Best Wishes to Andy and the whole team. And also Congratulations on the MSA Pro Mod Championship win. So glad he’s okay. Once again, well done to all the safety crews and marshals and officials on a great response. Huge thanks to them for all they do.
Highlights of the small but excellent field of Wild Bunch this weekend included the great spirit and camaraderie amongst all the Bunch, all eliminations being completed, a first time event winner, first time other finalist, and a first time Wild Bunch Series winner
Well done also to our very own young Harley Coulsell for winning 2 great rounds in Junior Dragster. (Not sure where he has finished in the Championship but was hovering around the Top 10, so Lynne and Mark, please update when you know!!) Congrats on a great season Harley!! And Happy Birthday for next Sunday! Wow a teenager!
Phil James and team had already won the 2018 Spirit of Nostalgia Series with one event in hand. Many congratulations to the whole team on this achievement! Phil’s second win in this Series. Also a huge well done to Keith Crampton in 2nd place, Terry Clifford in 3rd place, and Mark Coulsell in 4th place!
Big Congratulations to Phil and team who have Won the 2018 Wild Bunch Series for their first ever time! WB 1 will sure look nice on the back of the ‘Rampage’ funny car next season!! Huge well done to Keith Crampton on his 2nd Place finish, another great Top 4 result for him! (837!) Another huge well done to Mark Coulsell and team who have finished in 3rd place, amazingly Mark’s first ever Top 4 Wild Bunch finish after all these years!! Hooray!! Brilliant job and well done to all of Team Ratchet Strap, as they have finished a great 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series, their first ever Top 4! (Happy Birthday to Nicola! A great present!) Well done all round to all the Top 4!!
The other Top 10 winners remain as before the event, so very well done and congratulations to: 5th place Team B-Sting, 6th place James Auld, 7th place Pete Huckle, 8th place Rob & Pete Brown, 9th place Jim Tanner and 10th place Terry Clifford!
And Many Congratulations to Phil and team who have also won the 2018 Springbridge MSA Challenge Series!! Their third title! Well done to them!! This makes it a clean sweep on all 4 Series this year for the ‘Rampage’ team! Great achievement! Fair play folks! Best Wishes to you all.
Huge thanks to all the Santa Pod marshals and officials, track and safety crews and organisers for all their hard work as always!! They worked extra hard all day Sunday in the face of a long trying day, and a great tribute to get some qualifiers and all of the eliminations in. It was great to finish off the season with a full day of racing! Really nice to see all the marshals and crew lined up to present one trophy each to all the event winners, a really nice touch, and hope they can have a well-deserved rest!
All the best
PS. Full points will be updated as soon as I can! Plus, it is now less than 2 months until our Annual Prize Presentation and Dinner Dance on 24th November at Drayton Manor Park!
