Hi everybody!
Here are the results from the fantastic 14th Annual ‘Dragstalgia’ event at Santa Pod last weekend on 27th - 29th June. This event was Round 2 for the Wild Bunch, Spirit of Nostalgia Challenge and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series. The Wild Bunch had 29 entrants with some teams having multiple drivers. Disappointingly 5 teams who had entered could not make it for one reason and another, so the field this weekend was 24 teams! Unfortunately, Bobby Wright was out with gearbox problems in his altered “Alturd” and parts had only just arrived! And Bob Main had a breakage in his “Spiderman” altered. Another driver missing in action was ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell after the unfortunate engine blowup in “Backdraft” at the Nostalgias! But he had a Plan B and got to run his 1976-framed dragbike “Backdraft Two” with the NSA bike shootout for a couple of passes on Saturday!! Hope all of those teams and the others will be out soon to join back in! Two new cars made their debut, the “Charlie Banger” of “The Proper Charlies” team and the “Big Bro” altered of Kyle Southworth of Team Daddy Cool. We welcomed back Luca & Simona from Italy on their annual pilgrimage to Dragstalgia for their 7th time running with the Wild Bunch!! Sending very Best Wishes to British Drag Racing Hall of Fame member Ian Lloyd, crew chief of the amazing “Gonzo the Great” altered, who was very much missed at the weekend, though nice to see son Alan in the pits supporting the Bunch!
The weather was pretty hot most of the weekend, though a breeze really helped on Friday and Saturday! Sunday started cooler with some cloud cover and hardly any wind but it warmed up a lot later on in the day! 8 Wild Bunch teams took part in the RWYB day on Friday. In the extra class session on Friday evening, the Wild Bunch round was at about 5:15pm and 20 teams took part in that round.
On Saturday we were scheduled for 4 rounds of practice. There had been some overnight rain but this did not delay racing, and we had our first round about 5 minutes earlier than scheduled at 10:20am. Again, 20 teams participated in this practice round. Our second round was at about 2:30pm and 21 teams ran in this. Then our third round was at 5:50pm and again there were 21 teams running.
There was due to be another round for Wild Bunch, but with various delays during the day, including the top end generator going down just before one of our rounds (maybe due to heat!), most classes did not get their fourth run in, before the planned ‘Cracklefest’ took place at around 7:40pm. This was a fairly small, but entertaining show. There was one nitro slingshot and this was amazing as always, running seemingly ‘forever’!! About 5 Gassers took part plus Ian Turboville doing a push start fireup with his slingshot and there were 5 Wild Bunch cars enjoying the occasion! These were one altered, one funny car and three slingshots: our great Italian friends Luca & Simona with their beautiful Topolino “Fast Forward”, then Ruaridh Hart with his well turned out “BraveHart” Opel-bodied funny car, then Mark Houghton & Terry Robbins with their newly orange metalflake painted slingshot “Soul Town Shaker” and the Brown brothers, Pete & Rob with both their stack injected “Rebel” and “Wrathchild” slingshots, stalwarts of the Cracklefest! Very well done to all 5 Wild Bunch teams who put on a great show as usual in the fun Cracklefest!!
On Sunday, the Wild Bunch were scheduled for 3 competition runs. The cloud cover early on was welcome as it was a fair bit cooler than Saturday to start with. The organisers had to fit in an extra round of Nostalgia Superstock, so we were just a little behind on schedule, but got our first round in at about 10:45am with 19 drivers making passes but with 2 unfortunate red lights, and unfortunately one other being shut down on the line! At this point, Rob Brown in the “Rebel” slingshot was leading the Bunch with a great .0003 off Dial-in and Pete not far behind in “Wrathchild”! Brilliant!! The second round took place from 2:05pm onwards as there had been some downtime. In this round 19 teams took part. As usual, the rounds got closer as the afternoon wore on and our third and final round was at 4pm with 13 teams participating with three more unfortunate red lights amongst them. We were happy to get all 3 rounds in!
Here are the Top 6 at the event after the 3 rounds of competition, with average difference to Dial-in shown. Many Congratulations to all! :
1st Place: Rob Brown in ‘Rebel’ .0301 (So close to Dial-in all day! Great win Rob!)
2nd Place: Ruaridh Hart in ‘BraveHart’ .0414 (Brilliant to see a great Top 4 result for Ruaridh!)
3rd Place: The Proper Charlies in ‘Charles Bang Special’ .0834 (Their first ever Top 4 place! Well done team!)
5th Place: Ian Wild in ‘Wild'sCat’ .1157 (Great to see Ian earning another Top 6 trophy & having fun!)
6th Place: Pete Brown in ‘Wrathchild” .2059 (Pete was 2nd after first 2 rounds but a rocker broke in Round 3!)
Plus the other finisher to complete all 3 rounds without redlights: 7th – Alan Skipp in ‘Chasin’ Time’ .5077
Here are the Spot Prizes that were won. Many Congratulations to all! :
Closest to Dial-in (in the rounds): Rob Brown in “Rebel” with .0003 off in Round 1!! (Fantastic!!)
Best Reaction (in the rounds): Ruaridh Hart in “Bravehart” .0587 (Great stuff!)
Quickest E.T. of the event: Alan Skipp in “Chasin’ Time” 8.270 PB (Also fastest with 164.85 mph!)
Best Appearing Car: Loz Butcher in “Mean Streak” (Absolutely gorgeous and period correct!)
Best Appearing Team: Philippa Turton and team with “Bitchcraft” (Several PBs and very pink!)
Best Backup Girl: Alison Irons from Team “Rampage” (Great show with several different 60’s style dresses!)
Best Showmanship: the whole “Proper Charlies” team with the “Charles Bang Special” and “Charlie Banger” (great wheelie by Pete which won the overall event “Best Wheelie” trophy, and a proper nostalgic show!!)
Spirit of Nostalgia: the whole “Soul Town Shaker” team (a stunning new paint job, great backup girl with orange flake boots, loads of attention to new details plus a string of PBs with both Terry & Mark! Awesome!)
Many Commiserations to all those who had breakages or issues, especially Paul Tarry who blew his engine in the second round (thankfully all of the oil and some parts were fully contained in the full diaper that Paul now runs, as per the WB rules; once again saving driver and car from any worse problems!). Commiserations also to Kyle Southworth who dropped valves and blew a gasket in his lovely new altered and Wayne Colliver who had ignition issues. Wishing Joey and Colin and team very best of luck in sorting out the gearbox woes that prevented Joey from making more runs on Sunday! Many commiserations also to Bob Hawkins, who had been running in the Cannonball Shootout with his Nitro-powered “Time Traveller II” slingshot. Bob holed a piston after a stellar run of 6.51 on the Saturday, and after the team worked hard to rebuild the motor overnight, the car suffered more issues Sunday though Bob ran a 6.9!! Hope you can all get the cars fixed really soon and be back out having fun!!
Here is the full 24-car field of fantastic Wild Bunch participants!!!! Plus their PBs included! There were loads of PBs including some first 9’s!! Please please do let me know if I have missed any!!! There were so many!! Apologies if I have missed yours!!
